Server Configuration
The following are our server configuration. We always try to use the best components available without neglecting ease to use.
We pick Linux as our operating system of choice. We use Linux exclusively on all of our servers. Linux is an open source operating system that is reliable, scalable and secure. Nowadays, Linux is being used on more than 30% of all web sites on the Internet (source: Netcraft.com). Linux is also the operating system that grows higher than any other operating system for four years in sequence (source: IDC). Linux operating system is also known for a relatively secure system that immune to virus and other hazards especially when compared to legacy operating system like Windows.
The Linux distribution vendor we choose is RedHat. RedHat is well known for its popularity, and thus it is very easy to get technical support for RedHat Linux. Our team is also very experienced in RedHat Linux, we have been using RedHat Linux since version 4.0 which was released on 1996.
For hardware, we use systems with Intel or compatible architecture. We use it because of much lower price per performance factor. It is also easier to get than with other architecture. Besides, Linux has been tested more thoroughly on PC architecture.
We use Apache for our web server. It is safe to say that Apache is the de-facto web server on the Internet. Apache is being used on more than 60% of all web servers in the Internet.
The email server we are using is Qmail. Qmail is highly regarded as one of the most secure email server* It also has numerous features and addons, which make it more suitable for use with the rest of our system.
We provide MySQL database server. MySQL is the most
popular database system found in use with web sites. There are also
numerous third party software that require MySQL as database backend.
MySQL is suitable for web applications because of its simple design and
its speed.
We also provide PostgreSQL database if you need it.
PostgreSQL is a full featured relational database management system, it has
a lot of features found in high end database systems.
Perl is one of the most popular programming language
in the Internet. You can find a lot of third party program in the Internet
written in Perl.
PHP is another popular language. Designed solely as
programming language for the web, it is mostly popular for creating
web application. PHP is very easy to learn and has a lot of features.
We also provide Microsoft® Frontpage® Extension for
those who develop their web sites using Microsoft® FrontPage® client.
With Microsoft® FrontPage® extensionyou can take advantage of all
features found in Microsoft® FrontPage®.
We provide Chili!Soft/Sun ONE Active Server Pages if you
develop your application using Active Server Pages (ASP). It is commonly used
in Windows based system, but now you can use ASP on our Linux based system.
Ruby is an emerging scripting language as an alternative
to Perl or Python. It is gaining more and more followers each day.
TCL is another very popular language.
We use OpenSSH as our secure shell. It is a secure
alternative to insecure telnet or RSH protocol. By using SSH protocol
you can be sure that your data is safe from eavedropping.
